Kinja'd!!!

Would I be a loser for buying a RWD coupe with the same engine as my pickup? I was supposed to buy a car that wasn’t a project, had minor luxuries like air conditioning, and power steering even! And my wife would prefer something with... [looks at notes]... “airbags.” Yet I keep looking at old Toyotas, and sometimes an old 6-series, or a Brat, or whatever.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Too bad the dash is cracked on this guy.

From a Toyota guy who’s had a BRAT, they are amazing.

But can they best the 4wd Tercel I loved? Seems a difficult task.

Haven’t driven one to compare, but I’d almost bet it could. I learned many things in ours. I learned how to: drive stick, drive sideways, get stuck(stupid bicycle tires), and how to keep from flipping(caught a rut sideways).

I’ve not had a brat, but I have had a Subaru from the same generation. And I’ve not had a 4 wheel drive tercel, but I did have the regular front drive sedan.

If it what I know can be extrapolated, the tercel is more fun to drive.

My first car was a ‘79 Celics with the 4 cylinder I high school around 1990. It was slow and soft. It was originally red with a black interior... However in 1991 I got my first speeding ticket and the officer wrote this in the vehicle color box: salmon.

Buy the car your wife wants now. Pay it forward. THEN get something you REALLY want.

My first car was an ‘80 Celica with the refreshed nose, which I still prefer. The rest of the car was the same as the ‘78/79. Lots of fun in the snow and rain.

With their age, your best bet at finding good runners are likely on the south side of the US...which means more heat, which means higher likelihood of a cracked dash. Mine had a cracked dash, and it was only 14 years old when I got it.

Looks well tidy to me, and the interior looks simple enough to deal with, except for that crack. My dad had a Series B with the square headlights in exactly the same colour for 23 years - said it was the best car he’d ever owned. Reliable and a joy to drive.
